I hope the photographs in this exhibit will give you a feel for what a privilege it was to work for and with Donald MacVane. Donny has been captain to dozens of sternman, including some of the most successful lobstermen fishing in Casco Bay today. One of the Donny’s most striking traits is his independent spirit and we hope these images and anecdotes capture this accurately and respectfully. What is ironic is that although our elders generally become more dependent over time, Donny captained the “Carol” with a confident independence that inspired us. Sure, on occasion we may have been Donny’s ‘eyes’ and provided some youthful muscle for heavy lifting. Donny, however, showed us that independence is not tied to age but rather to integrity, strength of character, generosity, intelligence, and experience -- all traits that Donny displays with humility and warmth each day on the water.
